When Your Walls Speak Life

by Lois Flowers

These walls can speak, actually.

That’s the thought that crosses my mind as I travel from to room to room with the vacuum cleaner, sucking up the debris of the last week and a half (don’t judge) and wishing I was doing something else.

I’m not imagining all the conversations the walls have overheard throughout the years, although I’m sure some have been quite intense. Rather, I’m thinking about what the word art on my walls says to me as I pass by.

In the mudroom, right above a row of coat hooks, there’s a quote from Narnia.

“Some journeys take us far from home. Some adventures lead us to our destiny.”

By the back door—the one that opens out to our deck which steps down to the patio surrounded by the flowerbeds—hangs a framed print of the hymn “In the Garden” that a “secret sister” from MOPS gave me long ago.

“He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own. And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”

In the living room, above the two collage frames that show how each of our girls joined the family—another Narnia quote:

“This was the very reason why you were brought to Narnia, that by knowing me here for a little, you may know me better there.”

Next to that, a line from a country song that Randy and I used to listen to when we were newlyweds:

“Love grows best in houses just like these.”

Across the room, just above the piano, my favorite Bible verse:

“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

In our bedroom, another verse that provided comfort at a critical time:

“The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)

In the basement guest room, below one of my grandpa’s paintings, yet another Narnia quote:

“Lucy woke out of the deepest sleep you can imagine, with the feeling that the voice she liked best in the world had been calling her name.”

Above the kitchen sink, the most life-changing Narnia quote of all (for me, anyway):

“I am telling you your story, not hers. I tell no one any story but his own.”

There’s more—more Narnia quotes (if you can believe it), more verses, a snippet from Tolkien, even the entire text of my dad’s favorite essay.

It may sound as though every square inch of wall space in our home is covered in text, but these words are not obtrusive. They blend in, quietly offering their wisdom and encouragement to passersby who take the time to stop and read.

It’s true, what King Solomon said: A good word really does cheer up an anxious heart, and pleasant words actually can make a body feel better. (Proverbs 15:25; 16:24)

That’s the power of effective words—written or spoken, on the page or on the wall.

Now I’m wondering … do your walls speak to you? If so, what do they say?

Lois, I love this post and the invitation to consider what’s hanging on our walls.

May those images speak life and hope and peace and serenity.

When we moved here 5 years ago, I began hanging only things I absolutely loved and couldn’t live without. The rest of the pile sits on a basement shelf.

I should send them packing …

I’m with you, Linda. If I don’t love it, I don’t want it on my walls! I have once-loved stuff in boxes that probably should get donated too … I think I’ll put that on my to-do list for the fall. Hugs, friend.

I love reading what people display in their homes- thanks for this sweet peek into yours! Our home, once it’s all unpacked again, features several verses, a silly sign for the kitchen that says “ make your words sweet in case you have to eat them later,” and one of my favorite signs, which says, “but God.”

Ha ha, Bethany … that’s a great sign for the kitchen. We actually have one on our fridge door that says, “I’m sorry for the things I said when I was hangry.” (We always know when some of us need to eat!) You’ll have to send me a pic of “but God” in your new home … 🙂

What a great post! What an encouragement to have your walls “speak” to you through such life-giving and truthful words! I don’t have much on our walls other than floral artwork and family photos, but my 10month old son’s bedroom is Narnia theme so there are plenty encouraging quotes I read when I am changing his diaper or while I’d rock him to sleep when he was younger. I am looking forward to him growing old enough to hear the stories and the reason we chose Narnia as his bedroom theme!

Thank you for your kind words, Elena. I LOVE that your son’s bedroom has a Narnia theme … the books are a wonderful part of our family’s reading history and I have a feeing they will be for yours as well!

I love word art and I also have it hanging in various places around my house. My favorite is the word “enough” that is part of an abstract painting that is hung above my fireplace. When I sit in my living room, I am reminded that God calls me “enough.”

“Enough” is a powerful word, Mary. I love the message it gives you when you sit in your living room. 🙂

Hi Lois – I enjoyed the look around your home – with so many meaningful words:) I have quite a few “words” around my home as well. One of my favorites is a framed poem called “If You Could See Me Now” – here are just a few lines…

If you could see me now, your wouldn’t shed a tear.
I’ve beheld our Father’s face. I’ve touched my Saviour’s hand.
The beauty is beyond words, nothing can compare.
I’ve even seen your mansion; someday I will meet you there.
SO, please, don’t cry! We will meet again someday!

Thanks, Susan. By the way, I think I missed an earlier comment of yours … I saw it in my spam folder (I think that’s where it was) a day or two ago, and when I went to move it somewhere, it completely disappeared. It had something to do with college and uncertainty, I think. (Technology!!!)

In my last place, my walls screamed life. I was very intentional about putting life breathing words on my wall. On rough days, I turned to my walls for inspiration. “When God guides he provides” was at my front door. What a great reminder!

Solomon is absolutely right, “A good word really does cheer up an anxious heart, and pleasant words actually can make a body feel better.”

I can’t wait to find a new place and get to work on adding good words to my walls. Please say a prayer for me that God would lead me. Thank you.

I’ll pray for God’s direction for you, Yvonne. And I love the words you had at your front door … “When God guides, He provides.” Amen to that!

Your walls are speaking life! I love it! We just moved into an apartment where they allow us to put a hole in the wall. I’ve been looking for just the right words for my walls.

Good luck finding the right words for your walls, Mandy. In my experience, they accumulate over time, and you know the right ones when you see them. 🙂

I love the words your walls are saying to you, Lois. What good, encouragement you must see every day! I only have one picture with words hanging. It’s a watercolor of a little house. The words say “Home is a place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” Just to let my kids and their families know they always have a place to call home in case of an emergency.

And I was going to vacuum today too but thought better of it when I realized my grandkids are coming over today. 🙂

Spending time with grandkids definitely takes precedence over vacuuming, Laurie! And I love the message on your painting … that’s the kind of home I hope to have too!

Lois,
I have quite a few words around me house. In my kitchen – right above where my coffee stations is (so I’m frequently there) is a bronze script that says, “Abide in Him.” I need this reminder often. Other pictures have scripture. Out side our bedroom is, “Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay,” from Ruth. Like you I need these reminders around me. Thank you for the encouragement to pause and ponder as I look around my home.
Blessings,
Bev xx

Bev, I like the idea of putting encouraging words in spots that we frequent regularly (like your coffee station). The passage from Ruth is a good one too!

Lois, I love this post as each quote so powerfully speaks a message. On my walls – Micah 6:8; but the greatest of these is love; Make time for quiet moments as God whispers and the world is loud; and He restores my soul. May the words on our walls offer encouragement and hope to all who enter.

We have started adding words to our decor as well, and why not? It’s what gives us joy! LOVE the Narnia quotes, and I am enjoying the thought of your girls growing up immersed in true words.

So true about the joy, Michele. Words I love and pictures of people I love are my favorite kinds of home decor. Oh, and books too (of course)!
