4 Simple Expressions of Encouragement

by Lois Flowers

I heard a sermon about encouragement a few weeks ago.

It covered a single passage of scripture, so the application was limited to what the speaker found in those few verses. As I listened, however, it occurred to me that encouragement is not always a one-size-fits-most endeavor.

While some supportive gestures may be universally helpful, what encourages each of us individually often varies depending on our unique personalities, our current season of life and maybe even our gender.

Let’s take exercise, for example. I’ve never belonged to a gym or worked with a personal trainer. But based on how I’m wired, I’m pretty sure I would be more motivated to work out one-on-one with someone who showed me what to do and then did it alongside me, rather than in a group setting with people cheering me on as I struggled to complete an intense workout.

What encourages my soul may not be what encourages yours. In any case, though, it usually doesn’t take much—even the smallest overture can make a huge impression on someone else’s heart. That said, here are four simple gestures that never fail to bolster my spirits when I’m in need of a little encouragement.

• When someone cares for a person I love in a tangible way.

I was at Walgreens several months ago when I ran into an acquaintance from my parents’ former church. When this individual heard that my mom is now in a nursing home, she asked if it would be OK for her to visit my mom there.

Not everyone who makes such inquiries follows through on them. But I learned later that this friend and her husband went to see my mom right after our encounter at the store. She didn’t realize it, but she gave me a huge gift that day, simply by acting on her good intentions.

• When someone tells me he or she is praying for me.

I’m not sure how to explain it, but I almost feel a physical relief when I hear this. Somehow, whatever burden I’m carrying is lessened a bit just by knowing another person has followed up on a prompting to speak to God about me.

• When someone says or does something that shows me she is thinking of me.

Prayer certainly falls into this category, but so do emails, texts, blog comments, actual “thinking of you” cards and even little random gifts (like homegrown tomatoes, for example, or perennial shoots from someone’s else’s garden). Even though these small expressions of encouragement cost next to nothing, they are worth more than we might ever imagine.

• When someone reassures me that I’m not the only one.

Discouragement often rears its ugly head when I’m feeling all alone. And nothing makes me feel less alone than talking to someone who has been where I am and knows what it’s like.

That’s what I’m finding encouraging these days. How about you?

Funny, all of these things also encourage me! And you, friend, have done each of them for me. I’m so thankful for you and your encouragement! Thanks for these great ideas.

Sidenote: I just went from an exercise class to personal training. One on one is so much more my encouragement style too!

Aw … thanks, Bethany. I feel the same about you, my friend! How’s the personal training going? Someday I think I will do that too. 🙂

Lois, I love your four ways people have encouraged you. I find it encouraging when someone speaks into my life in an area where I am struggling. And, like you, when I know others are praying for me, that’s pretty incredible.

Like others have mentioned, I need to be more intentional in finding ways I can encourage others and then follow through.

Me too, Jeanne. By the way, it’s been such a blessing this week to hear from from some of the wonderful encouragers I’ve met online (and, in your case, in person). Hugs, friend!

Yes! All four of those things encourage me too. It is so helpful to have encouraging people around us. They can really give us a boost just when we need it. Thus proving the need for us to be encouraging to others too. Thanks, Lois.

This reminds me today that I also can be more intentional about being an encourager as you just don’t know what impact your gestures will have on someone else. And how much they may just need it!

It’s been a good reminder to me also, Lynn. On the days when I need encouragement the most, sometimes the thing that helps is trying to find ways to encourage someone else. I’m so glad you stopped by this week!

Thank you for this beautiful offering and for sharing at #TellHisStory. What a blessing that even in encouragement our uniqueness shows. Your words made me think of the five love languages or even the enneagram. Those are just ways to give more specific names to our personalities, but even so, the bottom line is how God created each of us. Love this!

Mary, I almost added something about love languages to this post, so I’m glad you brought that up. 🙂 I love the thought that God created us to encourage others in our own special ways. Hugs, friend!

It’s so true, Lois, that sometimes the smallest gestures mean the most to us (and I always love how that surprises me because I didn’t expect to be touched so deeply!) but when you mentioned the friend that immediately visited your mom, I thought that was one of the nicest things for someone to do. Your words challenge me to think of others a little bit more and myself a lot less. Good words here, as always! xo

What my mom’s friend did really made an impression on me too, Valerie … it still warms my heart to think of it several months later! Even better is knowing that it wasn’t a one-time thing … she and her husband have visited my mom several times since then too. 🙂 I appreciate YOUR encouragement, my friend!

I agree, these things are all so encouraging! And it’s true, it doesn’t take much to do them but the impact they have on others can be significant.
