4 Truths that Steady Us as the World Spins Faster

by Lois Flowers

Inside: When time flies by and it seems like the world is spinning out of control, the Book of Isaiah offers comfort and encouragement.

I’ve been blinking so much lately it feels like I’m in a perpetual dust storm.

I blinked and it’s November.

I blinked and the vibrant fall leaves are blanketing the ground.

I blinked and Thanksgiving is two weeks away.

I blinked and my daughter turned 21.

I blinked and I turned—well, another year older.

It’s as if we emerged from some kind of weird Covid-19 time warp into a world spinning so fast we can hardly keep up. Add in any number of societal changes and challenges, and it sometimes seems as if our entire planet is spiraling out of control.

But is it really?

Reading through the Book of Isaiah reminds me that this perception is not reality, however. Yes, our world is riddled with problems—many of which will not be fully solved until Christ returns. But here’s an important truth to remember right now: all the spinning and spiraling and swirling—both real and imagined—is known to God and under His control.

After all, He is the One who “created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk on it.” (Isaiah 42:5)

That’s us—the people on the earth and those who walk on it. No matter what is happening in us or around us, the same God who created the world is faithful to breathe life into our weary, anxious minds and bodies—primarily through the scriptures.

For example

When worries about the mid-term elections, the economy or the world at large crowd our minds, Isaiah 46:8 has good counsel:

“Remember this and be brave; take it to heart, you transgressors! Remember what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and no one is like me. I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: my plan will take place, and I will do all my will.”

When we don’t know what to do or how to respond, Isaiah 48:17 reminds us where our help comes from:

“This is what the Lord, your Redeemer the Holy One of Israel says: I am the Lord your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who leads you in the way you should go.”

When we find ourselves fearing an uncertain future, Isaiah 46:4 offers this promise:

“I will be the same until your old age, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you and I will carry you; I will bear and rescue you.”

Finally, when we lack words to pray in the midst of confusion and weakness, Isaiah 33:2 (among many others) rolls out a gentle template:

“Lord, be gracious to us! We wait for you. Be our strength every morning and our salvation in time of trouble.”

I’ve just started reading Isaiah again in my daily Bible reading. And so many of the initial chapters are dry and difficult. But your scriptures here remind me that good stuff is on the way as I plod through Isaiah. God is always worth waiting for. 🙂

Lois,

I feel as though we just stepped into the year and it’s already moving on without me. Thank you for these encouraging words. I loved this–“all the spinning and spiraling and swirling—both real and imagined—is known to God and under His control.” Thank you, Lord, for holding us in your hands.

Blessings to you,
Tammy

You’re right, Lois, it does seem like the world is spinning faster and time flies more than ever. Only God stills our hearts, brings us calm and peace in the middle of the crazy.

Especially at this time of year.

Meanwhile, I hope your weekend is joyful, sweet, and peace-filled. Bless you, girl.

Thank you for highlighting these encouraging truths from Isaiah, Lois. One of my favorites comes from Isaiah 65:24–Even before they finish praying to me, I will answer their prayers.” What a comfort to know our all-wise, all-powerful God is already at work in the troubling situations we face! He WILL see us through.

Amen and amen, Nancy! I love the verse you shared … I haven’t gotten to Isaiah 65 in my daily reading yet but I will be on the lookout for that one when I arrive there!

The crazy carnival ride analogy is a good one, Donna. (I personally hate those rides, so it’s even more fitting for me!) I’m glad the post helped you “slow down and release pent-up anxiety.” I need that too, my friend.

It does seem like the days are flying faster that ever. Love that prayer in Isaiah. It’s perfect for these times when the world seems to be going father and farther away from God.

Belated happy birthday to you and your daughter!

First of all, Happy Birthday! And yes, the days seem to be passing so quickly lately. Maybe we just need to stop blinking 🙂 It is amazing how much peace and comfort Isaiah, and the other prophets too, can bring to anxious hearts and minds. Beautiful post!

First of all, Lois, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope it was a pleasant one! When was your birthday? Our daughter turned 50 yesterday. I could so identify with those blinks of the eye. It seems the older I get, the faster life is zooming by, and I’m feeling more left behind with all the changes. Thank you so much for all the life-breathing scriptures from Isaiah that “breathe life into our weary, anxious minds and bodies.” So comforting. Love, hugs, and blessings to you!

Thanks for your kind words, Trudy. My birthday was last Saturday–it was good despite Molly coming down with Influenza A that day (she’s all better now). Happy birthday to your daughter too … she’s just a couple of years younger than me. 🙂 Love and hugs to you!

Lois,
What great Truth to cling to when the world is swirling about us. Lately, I’ve been drawn back to this verse in Isaiah: You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because He trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3. When the world seems out of control, the only way I can find peace is to keep my eyes fixed upon Christ and know/trust that He is in control. Great post for today!
Blessings,
Bev xx
