Share Four Somethings: April 2021

by Lois Flowers

Last week at this time, there was snow in the forecast. Today, we’re expecting a high of 86 degrees. It’s April in Kansas, after all.

I’m not a fan of waiting until the last minute. I would have preferred to have finished this post last week, not one day before it gets published. But real life takes precedent, and lately, that has included (among many other things) night-time driving practice with Molly and talking to my sister on the phone and helping Randy install a little concrete slab for our city issued recycling and yard waste carts.

Now it’s Monday, the house is quiet, and it’s time to wrap up the month by pulling together a few thoughts for Heather Gerwing’s Share Four Somethings linkup.

• Something loved

My spring garden gets the nod this month. I held my breath as the snow came and went, but everything seems to have survived the late-season coating of icy wetness.

The creeping phlox are in full bloom. The New Dawn rose is climbing up the trellis, despite—rather than because of—my clumsy attempts to train it. The hostas are stretching out their leaves, and the peonies are craning their burgundy spring foliage toward the sun.

Is it any wonder I love it out here this time of year?

• Something read

I love a good house metaphor, and the one I’m about to share with you really resonated with me. I happened across it in an article about whether thinking or feeling is more necessary when sharing Christ with people in our collapsing and increasingly confused culture (hint: it’s both).

The author shared a quote from “the old apologist Richard Cecil” about the process he went through when dealing with doubt. Perhaps you will find the analogy as helpful as I did.

“Like a man who is told that the foundation of his house is in danger, I call for the key of the vaults on which my dwelling stands,” Cecil wrote. “I light a candle, walk down stairs, and pass very deliberately through the arches: I examine very particularly the arch suspected; and, after having satisfied myself that the foundation remains perfectly safe, I walk up again, lock the door, hang up the key, put out the candle, and quietly go about my business, saying as I go, ‘They may raise an alarm, but I find ALL IS SAFE.’ ” (Original source: The Works of Richard Cecil: With a Memoir of His Life, Vol. 3, published in 1825)

• Something treasured

Every woman’s passage to motherhood is uniquely her own; mine was no exception.

It involved more surgeries than I care to remember. It took much longer than I thought was necessary. It also brought us two daughters whose lives have enriched ours in every conceivable way—and plenty of ways we never would have thought to imagine.

I treasure the memories. I treasure our family. I treasure the journey—past, present and future.

• Something ahead

Immediately ahead, Molly gets her braces off, and—once she completes the state-required 50 hours of practice driving—goes to the DMV for her driver’s license. We get Lilly from college, and both girls start working summer jobs they don’t have yet.

I finish the first phase of a rather open-ended, still-not-completely defined writing project and start working on what might be a much more grueling phase.

Those are the plans, anyway. Hopefully they’ll come to fruition.

A bit further down the road, Randy and I are starting to think about our empty nest, of a new nest, perhaps—one with a little more land and some sort of out building for a workshop.

He talks about moving to Arkansas or Texas, where it’s warmer. I dream of moving somewhere cooler. And then we take a Sunday afternoon drive a little ways out in the country and find a rural subdivision we’ve never seen before. Who knows? Maybe we’ll stick a little closer to home.

• • •

Now it’s your turn. Feel free to share your favorite springtime flower, a meaty quote you’ve read recently, or some future plans you’re looking forward to (but also holding loosely). If none of that applies, any other variation of something loved, read, treasured and ahead is welcome too.

Lois

P.S. I’m linking up this week with Share Four Somethings, #tellhisstory, InstaEncouragements, Recharge Wednesday, Let’s Have Coffee, #HeartEncouragement and Grace & Truth.

Hmmm … something loved, my 18-month-old great grandson who is living with us temporarily, something treasure, time with him and his mom, something read, Trusting God by Jerry Bridges and something ahead, doing more teaching this year.

What crazy weather! When we lived in Indiana it varied like that, too. Your flower photos are beautiful!! 🤩 So many good things here, and it sounds like your spring and summer will be busy with the treasure of family time. Praying that is precious, especially as you and Randy start thinking about empty nest life!

Thanks, Bethany. It’s weird to think we’re getting close to that season, even as we try to savor the moments in the current one. Happy May to you, my friend!

Linda, I think Sunday drives are one of Randy’s love languages, so we venture out rather frequently! Hugs, friend.

I am continually inspired by your posts! Here in Virginia, it is Spring, but winter continues to present its last vestiges of cold weather. It is SO lovely to see the azaleas bloom along with the vibrant green hostas while we slip on a morning sweater to keep us warm.
My husband and I have been navigating (carefully and cautiously) the empty nest. While our grown children are finally off and running, we are still tenderly taking care of grandchildren.
Sunday drives are truly motivational and certainly promote a lot of creative thought! Ya’ll have fun!

Virginia in the spring sounds lovely, Beverly! I appreciate how you describe navigating the empty nest … “carefully and cautiously.” And I totally agree about those Sunday drives. We stop at Sonic or Starbucks first and then spend an hour driving around … it definitely qualifies as fun in my book! Good to hear from you, my friend. 🙂

I love your beautiful flowers, Lois. I’m so glad they all survived. I love Randy’s sign, too. He is so creative. I find it hard to believe Molly will already be getting her license! And both girls working this summer. We need to capture all the special moments we can, right? I hope you find a place that will nurture your wonderful gardening skills and Randy’s creative wood-working. 🙂 Love and blessings to you!

Hi Trudy … so good to hear from you, my friend. Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. Molly and I will be driving again tonight … the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely growing brighter! Love and hugs to you!

We kept having cold spells in Alabama too. I had to drag my potted flowers in and out of the garage for days. But I think we’re finally safe at last from freezing weather. I’ve got my A/C on full blast today. 🙂

Lisa, we turned our HVAC system to cool the other day too. I sleep a lot better in the winter, but this year I’m lobbying for making our house a lot cooler at night. Hopefully that will help!

Love reading about your loosely held dreams. This is a time of transition for sure.
I am looking forward to a visit from Colorado grandson!! And after that, the return of my son from boot camp!
Then his wedding! Busy summer, and I foresee some writing crunch as real life, as you say, takes priority.

Your flowers look lovely! I have a few by my front door, and I’m looking forward to more soon.

I dream of living somewhere without allergy issues! While mine aren’t as bad as they used to be, I dislike feeling the need to stay inside like I have the last few days. Hopefully, it will be better soon. I need my walks and sunshine!

Aw, Jessica … I didn’t know you had bad allergies. Spring has been beautiful around here but it does seem like there has been an awful of stuff flying around in the air lately. Let’s schedule another walk once everything settles down, OK? 🙂

You are in an exciting phase of your life, Lois. The possibilities stretch out ahead of you. I think you will enjoy your empty nest. I love your photo of the dogwood in the snow. Such a contrast – spring and winter. I am with Randy…pining for warmer weather.

Yes, Laurie … Randy is definitely enjoying the upper 70s and low 80s we’ve been having lately. I, on the other hand, told him just today that we are going to have to agree to disagree, because I am already looking forward to fall! 🙂 Thanks for your encouragement about the empty nest … I’m not in a rush to get here, but I do think it will be fun!

We haven’t had snow, but we’ve had up and down temperatures the last few days. Hopefully that’s the last cold snap of the spring! Your flowers are pretty! Our dogwoods are about done blooming, and my roses have started. We’ve been wanting the plant some things along our fence line the last couple of years, and I hope we get to that this year.

I love that sign! And that’s a good quote.

Our youngest just moved out a few weeks ago, so we are in the throes of adjusting to the empty nest. I don’t know how long it will take to get over this sensation that he is down the hall in his room. Our plans now are to stay put, Lord willing–we just refinanced our home a few months ago to take advantage of lower interest rates.

Fence lines are among my favorite places to plant, Barbara. I can imagine that sensation of feeling like your son is down the hall in his room. Just the other day, completely out of the blue, I thought, “I wonder when Lilly going to get home,” even though she is at college and not coming home until the end of the semester. 🙂 I’m glad you were able to refinance … we did that about 10 years ago when rates were low after the Great Recession. It makes such a difference in the payment, doesn’t it?

I ♥ your pink dogwoods – a fave for sure. We are enjoying Spring here in Tiny House in Upstate SC. Now that the pollen demon is almost gone we are breathing better! It will be interesting where you build that empty nest. Wherever you are together will be the best nest!
