Share Four Somethings: Thanksgiving Edition

by Lois Flowers

Inside: This holiday week seems like a good time to revisit this blogging tradition. But instead of focusing on the usual categories, I’m sharing four things I’m thankful for this year.~

I used to write a Share Four Somethings post every month, but last fall, I missed an installment. One month turned into two, and two somehow turned into more than a year.

To be specific, the last time I participated in Jenn’s Share Four Somethings linkup was August 2024.

I’m not even going to ask where all the time went. But the week of Thanksgiving seems like a good time to revisit this tradition, with a twist. Instead of going with the usual categories, I’m going to share four things I’m thankful for this year. Starting with …

God’s Goodness in My Life

Eight months ago today, I was hit by a car when I was riding my bike. As I’ve shared before, I have no recollection of this accident or the days immediately thereafter. I spent 19 days in the hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury, neck fractures and a badly broken leg, among other things.

Every month, I can look back four weeks and notice ways that I am better. I can look back to the days I don’t remember and see how far I’ve come.

I think about the people around me who served as God’s hands and feet to me—my husband, daughters, neighbors, sisters, friends near and far. As well as the friends and family members around the globe who prayed for me.

My road to recovery has been long, but God has been faithful every step of the way. I’m so very grateful for His promises, protection and provision.

Online Grocery Shopping

Speaking of God’s provision, the ability to order groceries online and have them brought to my car at the store has been a huge blessing this year. I had never done this before my accident, but it’s been so convenient and helpful—for family members when I wasn’t getting around very well, and now for me.

The online shoppers aren’t as particular as I am when it comes to picking out produce, but that’s the only downside as far as I’m concerned.

I actually like shopping for food, so I don’t expect to keep ordering my groceries online forever. For this season, though, this service has been a gift.

A New Form of Exercise

After being hampered by ice, snow and freezing temperatures last winter, I was planning to get a stationary recumbent bike this fall so I could still exercise during inclement weather. Those plans came to fruition a little earlier than expected—I bought the equipment in July and have been using it in my basement ever since.

At times, I do miss riding my bike on the trail near my home. I enjoyed seeing deer and cardinals, as well as interacting with other people on the path.

Mostly, though, I appreciate the convenience of going downstairs to ride whenever I want to, rain or shine.

The Great British Baking Show

Sometime in the last year, Randy and I started watching The Great British Baking Show again. To date, we have watched (or rewatched, as the case may be) every single season, including the earliest ones before the PBS episodes.

We’ve even indulged in spinoffs like The Great American Baking Show and The Great British Baking Show: Holidays. Our favorite—hands down—is the British version with the regular home bakers from throughout the United Kingdom.

We love their accents, not to mention their ability to assemble puff pastry, create amazing scenes out of bread dough and withstand the scrutiny of the judges week after week.

One More Thing

I’m also grateful for those of you who have subscribed to my new monthly newsletter, Courage Dear Heart. If you filled out the form in the last several weeks and haven’t received anything yet, the confirmation email probably went to your junk or spam folder.

If you can’t find it there, please subscribe again and check those folders for the opt-in message. Be sure to add the newsletter’s email address to your safe list so you don’t miss anything else. Thanks for your patience; I’m so sorry for all the hassle!

If you haven’t had a chance to sign up for the newsletter yet, you can do so here:

As my way of saying thanks, you’ll receive a free copy of my 7-day devotional, Faith, Fear, and the God Who Goes Before Us.

I had no idea you had been hit by a car on your bike! I am so sorry, and thankful you are healing! I do online grocery shopping every 2 weeks. I started with Covid and I have no desire to do the big shopping anymore. I do go into grocery stores for produce, and things we run out of like milk or whatever, but the big trip, nope, not unless they cancel online ordering. We used to love watching The Great British Baking Show as well. Have a great week and a very Merry Christmas! https://encounterswiththedavisfamily.blogspot.com/2025/12/share-four-somethings-november-2025.html

I love your Share 4 Something’s Lois. I’m still praying for you. When Jesus puts someone on my heart, their there. I thought about getting a stationary bike. I’m not much of an exerciser but I’m interested in maybe beginning with the indoor bike.

Thanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month sweet friend. I’m so happy you’re here.

Recovery can be so hard. I had major spinal fusion surgery five years ago – I wish I’d been able to do on-line ordering then – what a blessing that is. Bravery and determination in recovery is so very important – and you have so very much of it! Praying that you have good rest, that any discomfort heal, and that soon you will be back on the bike trail again!

Thanks so much for your kind words and prayers, Maryleigh. Major spinal fusion surgery sounds … well, major! I hope it all went well. I also hope you have a lovely December!

Wow I am sure recovery has not been easy but I love your attitude of gratitude. We have used grocery pick up just a time or two here and there and it really is so convenient when going into the store just doesn’t feel feasible. I’ve been trying to find the episode of celebrity Great British Baking Show with David Schwimmer since I hadn’t realized he was ever on it until they mentioned him on this latest season. I thought that would be a fun one to watch.

That does sound like a fun episode, Joanne. I didn’t know David Schwimmer was ever on the show either. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season! ❤️

What a lovely set of four somethings, friend. I echo each of those for you, thanking the Lord with you, and identify with many of them too (we haven’t rewatched every episode of Bake Off though, just several of them haha!) Happy belated Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for you!

Ahhhh, Lois you’ve been through quite a journey my friend. But I’m so glad you’re healing well. ☺️

And to answer your questions I do order groceries online & have then delivered to our door, which was a true gift in lock down during Covid times that we have kept ever since especially with our chronic health conditions.

I have watched the British baking show in the past & Mary Berry’s cooking program which I always enjoy. I find many British shows rather calming. ☺️
Visiting from Maree’s today.
Blessings, Jennifer

I’m giving thanks for the elliptical we bought last summer. Now that the weather is falling apart and the sun is visible for so few hours, I agree with you—it’s great to have the option to exercise in the basement.

Michele, I’ve never used an elliptical but I’ve heard they give you a great workout. I’m glad you have that option during the cold, dark winter. Happy Thanksgiving, friend!

I am so thankful God spared your life, Lois! Yes, God is so faithful. Even though what works before for us doesn’t work today. I do online shopping but not with groceries. I’m so glad you had that extra help. When it’s too cold for me, Len goes himself. I just have to add more details to my list sometimes. 😉 I have never seen that baking show listed on TV, but I do enjoy the baking shows, especially the kid ones. 🙂 Love and blessings for a Blessed Thanksgiving to you, Randy, Lilly, and Molly!

Trudy, I love that Len shops when it’s too cold for you, and that he is able to get by with more detailed instructions. I like the kid baking shows too … it’s amazing the amount of skill they have at such an early age! Happy Thanksgiving to you, dear friend!

I used online shopping a lot during the pandemic. It was convenient in many ways, but not perfect. Produce was one issue. Another was when they said they were out of an item, but when I went in to get a few things I had forgotten, I saw several of the items they said they were out of on the shelf.

Our stationary bike is in my husband’s office, which has a big screen TV leftover from when his mom lived there. When I rode the bike, I used to watch programs that I knew he wouldn’t be interested in watching in the evenings. 🙂 That gave me something to look forward to. I haven’t used it in months, though.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I hear you about online shopping being convenient but not perfect, Barbara. Watching programs that only you like is a great thing to do while exercising. I usually listen to podcasts, which also helps the time go by faster.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

I have started online grocery shopping this year also after two eye surgeries and one fall. I like it and I think I’ll continue! My favorite go to is on YouTube “Escape to the Country.”

I’m glad you’ve found online grocery shopping helpful too, Norma. And I was not familiar with “Escape to the Country” but it sounds like it would be right up my alley! 🙂
