Inside: We’re all unique, with our own individual tastes and personalities. This week, I’ll share a few categories, add my thoughts and then let you chime in with your own personal preferences. ~
As we round the bend from a full April into the busy month of May, it seems like a good time for some light-hearted fare.
I enjoy questions that allow people to get to know one another on new and sometimes deeper levels. So this week, I’m going to throw out some “this-or-that” type options and let you pick which one describes you best.
There are no right or wrong answers, of course. We’re all unique, with our own individual tastes, personalities and preferences. If you find that neither option applies to you, feel free to add your own.
I’ll share a category and then add a few thoughts about it. I’d love for you to do the same in the comments, for any topic that grabs your attention.
Thinker or feeler
Over the years, I’ve gotten more comfortable with my “feeler” side, but I’m sure it comes as no surprise to regular readers that I lean heavily in the “thinker” direction. What I love about this category is that, once we accept that our way of processing isn’t the only or best way, we can learn so much from those who see or feel things differently.
Music or quiet (while writing or reading)
Several decades ago, I literally wore out The Life is Beautiful soundtrack writing a book about infertility. It remains the best writing music of all time, in my humble opinion.
That said, I usually have worship music or hymns playing in the background when I write these days. I mostly tune it out, but sometimes, singing along actually helps me think.
Type or write by hand
Years of scribbling notes at press conferences and newspaper interviews wrecked my handwriting. I’ll jot down lists, menus and notes to myself, but I type pretty much everything else, including my prayer journal.
Mexican or Italian food
I can’t choose between these two. It’s Italian at home and Mexican at restaurants. (Although I do appreciate a good plate of homemade nachos, heavy on the cilantro.)
Worry or doubt
Over the course of my life, worry has always been a much bigger issue than doubt. Not as much now as it used to be, thankfully, although it still rears its ugly head every now and then.
Based on my own limited experience and observations, I have a theory that people either struggle primarily with worry or with doubt. I suppose there are those who have never struggled with either, and some who deal with both. But maybe they are the exception rather than the rule?
I might be wrong about this, so I’d love to know what you think.
Gardening or crafts
There are some seriously crafty people in my family, but I am not one of them. I don’t even have a Pinterest account, if that tells you anything.
It’s gardening all the way for me, as evidenced by the message on my favorite t-shirt: “Easily distracted by plants.”

Let’s close this little exercise with a few fill-in-the-blanks. (All in good fun, of course.)
There’s a right way and a wrong way to …
Load the dishwasher. (If you happen to have someone in your house who loads it exactly like you do, you have a priceless treasure indeed.)
I don’t know how anyone could not like …
Nuts. Especially in chocolate chip cookies. (Unless you’re allergic. Otherwise, help me understand not liking nuts.)

Now it’s your turn, friends. Please share your preferences in the comments. I can’t wait to hear what you think.

Thinker or feeler … both but more of a thinker
Music or quiet … quiet but then a song always comes when I am reading or writing
Type or write by hand … depends on the day. If thoughts are coming too quickly, I type.
Mexican or Italian … Italian more but I love Mexican
Worry or doubt … I have done both but more worrying than doubting
Gardening or crafts … there is not a single crafty gene in me so I must say gardening
There’s a right way & a wrong way to … load the dishwasher. And yes, I have been known to rearrange mine.
How can anyone not like … pizza!!!
Aw, Joanne … I always appreciate when you include songs in your blog posts. I totally understand how typing works best to get those rapid-fire thoughts down. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been known to rearrange a dishwasher. I hope you’ve had a lovely Mother’s Day, dear friend.
Okay I have to elaborate on my There’s a right way and wrong way to: Put toilet paper on the roll. Over. Lol.
A few extras:
And I have to say I don’t like chocolate ( I know… gasp). BUT give me a couple (okay several) of Terry’s Chocolate oranges around the holidays.
I love breaded calf liver and onions.
My favorite TV show is the Golden Girls
My favorite Christmas movie is ELF and yes I talk along with the movie. Lol.
Wow, Paula … I’ve loved getting to know you more in this way! And although I don’t share your opinions about chocolate or breaded calf liver, we are definitely on the same page when it comes to the proper way to install toilet paper! Hugs, friend.
Oh this is fun! “Over” thinker.
Music in the car ( K Love). Silence while reading Scripture. TV on for background noise while reading or writing, but I don’t ” hear” anything while I’m reading.
Daily notes by hand, but type anything else.
Italian
Gardening or crafts is tricky. I kill outside plants but have several indoor ones that are surviving okay. Crafts is when the craft bug bites me so if I want to make something I have to make it now, because it might be months in between the next time I feel like making something. So I always have supplies on hand.
There’s a right way and a wrong way to put toilet paper on the roll.
I don’t know how anyone couldn’t like Bacon
Ps: loaded nachos for me ( no cilantro though)
Thanks bunches and bunches for sharing this with Sweet Tea & Friends this month dear friend. I’m so happy you’re here.
I love your answers, Paula! I totally get what you mean about being an “over” thinker. 🙂 And good for you keeping houseplants alive. I am OK when it comes to Christmas cactus but am notoriously bad at growing African violets! ❤️
Oh, I love this!

There’s a right way and wrong way to fill the dishwasher – and no one in my house sees it.
I don’t know how anyone could not like. . . lemon curd!
Maryleigh, I understand what you mean about wordless music being quiet … I feel the same way about classical music. I’m sorry no one in your house gets your dishwasher loading system. And I don’t know if I’ve ever even HAD lemon curd … but it does sound delicious!

Can’t choose between Mexican and Italian food!!

There’s a right way and a wrong way to reheat food (i.e., some foods need a lid in the microwave when reheating!)
I don’t know how anyone could not like popcorn. 🙂
This was very fun, Lois! I knew some of these about you, but not all!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Bethany. I loved seeing how many answers we have in common. Hugs, friend.
Thinker or feeler: I think both, but heavier on the feeler side.
Music or quiet: I used to like playing music while writing, but as I got older I need more quiet.
Typing or handwriting: Typing, because my handwriting has gotten too shaky.
Mexican or Italian food: I like both as long as they’re not too spicy.
Worry or doubt: I’m too much of a worrywart. It has been a lifelong lesson for me to learn to place all things into the Hands of the Creator and Controller of this world.
Gardening or crafts: Gardening when I was more able to do it.
Right and wrong ways: I’m learning to let go of right or wrong ways of doing things, especially since my hubby retired and wants to help me. 😊 I have to learn to let go of that perfectionist in me sometimes and learn to appreciate any help I can get.
I don’t think I’d mind nuts in chocolate chip cookies, but I don’t think anyone else in my family would like my chocolate chip cookies anymore if I added nuts to them.
This is interesting, Lois! Love and blessings to you!
Thanks for participating, Trudy! I understand about being a worry wort … I’m still learning to “place all things into the hands of the Creator and Controller of this world” too. (And what a beautiful way to describe it!) I’m so glad Len wants to help out and you are learning to let him. (You are a good example for me!) Love and blessings to you too, dear friend.
This is fun!
Thinker or feeler: sort of in the middle, but a little more on the thinker side.
Music or quiet: quiet.
Typing or handwriting: typing. My handwriting has never been good, I’m sorry to say, but note-taking in college doomed it even further.
Mexican or Italian food: both! I grew up in southern TX, where Mexican food (or “Tex-Mex” fusions) are a must.
Worry or doubt: I’ve wrestled with both, but with worry more.
Gardening or crafts: crafts.
Right and wrong ways: I agree about the dishwasher. I’ve been known to rearrange it after other people load it. 🙂 Also: the way TP comes off the roll, how towels are folded (this one has mainly to do with how our linen closet is shaped and what works best there), how things are arranged in the refrigerator and pantry.
I don’t know how anyone could not like chocolate (unless they are allergic). I’m ambivalent about nuts. I have trouble chewing them well enough (I didn’t get braces and probably should have). But I don’t feel they really add anything to baked goods.
I enjoyed reading your answers, Barbara. Don’t tell anyone, but I have been known to rearrange the dishwasher too. Looking forward to delving into your next piece of writing this weekend.
Heavy on the cilantro … is there any other way?
Feeler with a heavy dose of thinker
Music (usually from a movie soundtrack) while writing/quiet while reading
Typing (when I write)/writing for virtually everything else
Italian
Possibly doubt–good question!
Neither. My family would starve if we had to rely on me to grow food. I’ve always said that I grow people and words.
There’s a right way and a wrong way to…dishwasher.
I don’t know how anyone could not like sweets!
I loved reading your answers, Natalie. I can see you in each of them. And I appreciate that we are totally on the same page when it comes to cilantro! I suppose I grow people and words, but also flowers. Hope you are well, my friend. I’m praying for your May adventures.❤️
Some of these I had to think about!
Thinker
Quiet (unless I really need to focus or I’m trying to relax)
Type (unless there is any ounce of emotion tied to it (journal/card etc), then it must be handwritten)
Mexican
Worry
Crafts
If someone else is loading my dishwasher I don’t care how it’s done! There is, however, a right and a wrong way to wipe down the table.
I’ve never had nuts in choc. chip cookies but I would probably like it – I don’t know how anyone could not like chocolate in general.
Thanks for chiming in, Amelia! I love these insights into how you think and do things. Especially the part about writing something by hand if there is an ounce of emotion tied to it That makes a lot of sense! I appreciate that there is a right and wrong way to wipe down a table. And I feel the same about chocolate! Hope you are doing well and settling into life here. ❤️

There’s a right way and a wrong way to… (Am I a slacker? I can’t think of a single thing that I feel this way about!)
I don’t know how anyone could not like ice cream!
Thanks for kicking off the commenting, Michele! I don’t think you are a slacker about the right and wrong way question … I’d say your answer is a sign of flexibility! 🙂 I enjoyed reading your thoughts!
